The Acclimatization Bible: Conquering Khardung La & Pangong Tso Safely
“A life-saving altitude guide for Leh-Ladakh travelers covering the mandatory 48-hour rest rule, oxygen rental kiosks, and self-drive permit protocols across Chang La.”

1. The 48-Hour Leh Rule Is Non-Negotiable

Landing at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport instantly thrusts your body to 11,500 ft above sea level. Attempting to drive up to Khardung La (17,982 ft) within the first 48 hours is the primary cause of acute mountain sickness (AMS) evacuation. Spend the first two days resting, sipping butter tea, and taking slow evening walks around Leh market.

Insight

Medical Rule: Hydrate with 4 liters of electrolytes daily; avoid alcohol and sleeping pills on your first 3 nights.

2. Nubra Valley vs Pangong Tso Routing

Always travel from Leh to Nubra Valley (10,000 ft) via Khardung La first, before heading across the direct Shyok River route to Pangong Lake (14,270 ft). Sleeping at the lower altitude of Nubra prepares your lungs for the sub-zero night temperatures at Pangong.
